10-01-12 Mustang Love-Update
I have lost the other three updated photographs when my camera card got stuck in my camera. This picture was taken for me by someone else, just today. I have not worked on the drawing for 2 weeks as I waited for someone to take the photograph for me. I wanted you to see the drawing before I started on the sky work. I am redoing the hair on the head parts of the horses, then off to work on my sky. I have made a decision for my background work. My dear sister friend, who inspired me to draw this wild horse pair, has also inspired me with her idea for the sky work. Something that will make it more special, and spiritual in nature. I don't want to say more about the spiritual aspect of the drawing until it's complete. From the start of this project, my sister friend has been the motivation behind it. *The dark shadow below, is not part of the drawing. It was the best of three photo's taken, I thought.* I hope to have my camera worked on before I get this work finished, so I can add it to my list of artworks on my FAA printing site. In the meantime, I will be back to work on it tonight.
Update: Mustang Love 8-09-12
I put about 4 more hours of work into this last night. Coming along quite nicely. I'm working on the nuzzle, and head veins, shadow, and light. More work on their manes yet to finish, too. The background I am covering in graphite, and some kind of erased background design. I have an idea, but still working on it. It's a large drawing because I want to be able to offer up even larger prints when it's done. :)) I'm happy the photograph came out so well.
new! Goth Girl-portrait, Sonja.
Update: 5.08.12
Sonja's photo image.
I should have drawn Sonja from this image, rather then a paper copy. Next drawing will be in color pencil. I had fun with this practice, but I don't think I did so well with the watercolor pencils.
The actual date of completion was 05-09-12. I did not see that I had the wrong month on the date of my photograph, until it was too late. My bad. |
Sonja 5.09.12
I'm not happy with the lower right side of the art. A large paper flaw showed up when I applied the water. It was a lot worse then it looks now. Once I seen the mess from the paper flaw showing through I tried to cover it, but it still looks bad.
(With her permission, comment below from Sonja, on my FB page.)
Sonja Ljubicic, this is absolutely beautiful my dear Janet.... I am thankful and honored beyond words.... what I really loved also was your choice of the photo... that one has never been painted before- and I kinda like to think it shows a bit of my dark side- I look like a goth chick which I used to be in 2nd year of highschool LOL.... also this one is really like me- with the smudged make up hahah! thank you so much for this joy!!!!! |
Sonja 2012 Final Version
11" x 15" Watercolor Pencil art.
August 2013.
I went ahead and added part of Sonja's hand, and fingers.
I hated the unfinished look, and that dumb paper flaw in the corner. I used my watercolor pencils as a painting pencil, getting the pencil wet but not the paper. I gently drew the color in, so the paper would not get soaked with water, or the paper would want to peel. I didn't have a picture of her with the hand, so I looked at her other personal photos and found she has long, thin arms, with long slender fingers on her hands. So, I improvised. I'm not sure it looks quite right, but I did my best.

Project Artwork...
Original: Impatien Dreams 2000
My first finished Impatien Dreams was part of a planned set of 4 drawings.
Pretty females in various states of fantasy, semi-conscience of their surroundings in dream like form. Sort of that product, the name I won't say, but it takes you away while you're lying in a warm bathtub of soothing bubbles. This was a theme I really wanted to put down in that "lost to the real world" way for a relaxing, taking it easy style of viewing. I love heavy, beautiful scented flowers, like the one in the drawing, and that was part of the theme, as for me scents really do help me to relax. I ended up starting over with a new idea, when I began to share the work I am doing in stages with pictures. I have seen other artist's do this, and it was something new to try, so I did! I finished two of them, and never got past the first stage of the third drawing. I retried the drawing 7/8 times, and paper was not cheap for me, so I set the set aside, knowing I would go back to it again one day. I decided to start over, because after 10 years of looking at it on my walls, I wanted to do it a wee bit differently, and found that my skills have improved since then.
>What's funny, and not<
In starting again, it was not any less frustrating. I have started this drawing, got several weeks into the work only to have to start over again, and each start over the drawing was looking different, and part of that is changing the type, and size of drawing paper. The first stage in laying down the outline of the drawing is time consuming, taking several days, and making me wish I had one of those light boxes I seen in the art store last month. This last drawing, if you check in on my site once in a while, is now finished, and waiting for framing.
I used a magazine model posing for a perfume ad. I didn't portrait the model. I liked the position she was posing, and the way her gown made such detailed wrinkles, and folds.

#1. A redrawing of my Impatien Dreams.
07-14-2010
Right at this point in my first redrawing attempt, about 7 or so days into it, I was inspired to try this work in stages after seeing other artist sites had shared work in various stages of their paintings. I removed what color I had drawn, and started from the first sketch stage in simple clean lines.
#2. Laying down the base color.
7-20-2010
"Finally found the missing stages of photographs
on the first attempt to redraw this picture. "
A few of these pictures did not come out well with my camera
but enlarged enough that you can see the details, and base color.

#3. Larger view, more work.
7-21-2010
I had enlarged this photo for a better look at the details, and adding more flowers behind the female.
Most of the base color down, including portions of
the sky. The photo is still pretty faded though. This was before I got my beautiful digital camera.

#4. One week later.
7-21-2010
I really hated how faded my photographs were coming out. I recall having problems with good camera shots at the time. Lighting was a problem as well.
There is a week of added work with the overall drawing with cleaner lines, and moving on to the next stage of color.

#5. Sharper focus.
8-19-2010
After playing with the indoor lighting, and my camera features, I was able to get this sharper focus after 3 more weeks of working on the drawing.
#6. Working, & the basic needs of a freehand artist.
8-19-2010
I wanted to share in this photograph,
which has no extra work on it, what materials I am working with. As a color pencil artwork, the pencil, is of course,
the medium I'm working with.
The drawing is taped with a low tack artist's tape for keeping your work secure in one place without harming the paper. The plexiglass underneath has split wooden dowels that are screwed in place to keep the overall art board sturdy, and strong. I use a small battery powered eraser. This type of eraser is much more friendly to the paper. One of my pencils, inside the pencil shape wood with metal on top, will twist the smaller pencils inside as an extender. I want to get the most out of my pencils I can.

#7. Progress.
9-07-2010
Three weeks later... Playing with color on the hair. Do I want it darker, lighter, then experimenting with both. Stronger details, and a lot more color.
Here I worked the drawing to show the different stages of color, and the more defined lines, and details. Showing shadows, and light.

A different angle, and softer lighting.
#9. Two days later.
9-09-2010
Working on more play with the hair, skin color shades.
Mostly working randomly now that I've shared several stages of color.

#10. OH NO! Damaged!
09-16-2010
An accident with my pet cat, Tommy made the paper double crease across the hand you see go up over her shoulder, when Tommy wanted to play all of a sudden, (as he was just quietly sitting there in front of me watching me draw,) he surprised me by jumping at my paper with both paws that creased the paper up and down while pushing against me and folding up to a nice, "Crum bums!"
"I kinnut fix this one, Captain!"
"I kinnut fix this one, Captain!"
#11. A better view of damage.

Easier to see the creases in the paper here.
I was loving how the drawing was coming along.

#1. Impatien Dreams.
09-17-10 thru 09-23-2010
The time it took to complete the first stage
outline of -once again- Impatien Dreams.
Four days of work to re-sketch the out-lines.
I changed to a more durable drawing paper.
The color goes on differently, because the paper
has more tooth. It is however, smaller in size by
2 inches on the width.

A view to show you the whole drawing.
I tried some grass interest.
I didn't plan it, but I decided at this point for a change
because I was going to include the butterfly as in my
original.

Final Photo.
10-19-2010
Yes, you read that right. This is the final photo of
the second try drawing of Impatien Dreams.
Surprise!!
It's the final photo after putting in another 5 hours of work
from just the day before photo on the 18th.
That is because once again my drawing was destroyed.
It wasn't the cat, or anyone's fault, just a freak accident
in putting it away for the night. Shocked, heart broken, and livid,
I gave myself a few days, then started it again.

Intermission... With Tommy...
In the months ahead I continue to draw on my third try drawing of Impatien Dreams.
4-29-2011
My bed hogging Tommy cat.
Sleeping by my little stuffed bunny
in his favorite position on his back, stretched
as far as he can.
Background: Lilacs on my bedspread with
Art stuff, Bibles, blanket, pillows.

#1. And....Were back!
2 & 1/2 months later.
5-03-2011
So, I just started over from the beginning, and kept on
drawing till I got to about the stage of the 2nd drawing,
before that came to an end.
I went a little further because the other drawings I went
through, I had already showed the various stages of color,
so no need to go over that again.
You can tell that this drawing is different from the first two.
They never come out the same. That's the easiest way to
tell a true freehand artist. The down side to freehand, is the time
it takes, and there are always going to be do-overs, even if the work was not damaged before they were complete.

#3. Working on it.
05-05-2011
Doing more work on the face, and hair. When you see dark area's
like on the females eye lid, that is how I sometimes set the
base color. When I erase this dark area of the skin, there will
still be color, but much lighter. This technique I tried, helps
to erase over, and over several times if I'm not happy with
results of added color. You can't over erase though. The oil
from the pencil will eventually stain in the tooth of that spot.

#5. A week later.
5-12-2011
I toned down the skin on the eye lid, face, and defined the
jawline. hairline more.
Going for a brighter base of color with the hair shades.
I add color, streak the lights, streaks of dark. I remove the color,
add the color, until I have the right effect of shades. This process
of my work, I take my time with. To over work the paper can leave
me stuck with a shade or light that can change the whole look of
that part of the drawing. Color is permanent, but you can work
color if you work lightly. Working the color up, down, to the effects I'm looking for.

#6. A different view.
05-12-2011
Showing the drawing in more direct light.
The skin on her face looks darker shade of peach, toned up,
with a cream, and beige shades of color.
you can see the shades of leaves according to the light
they capture on top leaves, and the darker shades of leaves that are lower on the stems of the plants underneath.
A good angle, as it captures the colors better.

#9. An even bigger view.
06-02-2011
You can see what I mean by the tooth in this paper.
That's a boost in the work of adding, and erasing the
color. It takes more work to get the right effect on a heavy paper with a light texture to it like this paper. It allows for
heavy coats of color as well.
This is a more accurate size of the flowers on the drawing.

Close up view with the shades of colors on the leaves.
To the top flower on the left, you can see the added, then the erased spring green color, that I have left for a base color, and primary shade of green, which is then glazed over with white. Glazing, a technique of drawing heavy over the top of my base color, for that background dream like setting.

#11. Example close up view
05-02-2011
Example of erasing color.
This portion of the skin looked uneven,
so I erased it in the uneven area's, to then
color in lightly, until I have that even tone.

#12. View overall.
6-02-2011
Many blank area's yet to fill. Still working with the skin tones
as I add on more layers of color. I used light peach color as the base color. Then worked it more, and more in heavier layers of color. Shade area's are colors burnt okra, dark peach, then soften with cream, helping it to blend well along the edges of color.

The photograph is lightly blurry. Light was bouncing off of the leaves.
You can still see the good amount done, and the face, neck area's are looking more natural in skin tone.
Nearly done with her gown. Making the highlights in the folds of the material at this point.

#14. Cropped close-up view.
6-08-2011
Sharper view. Excellent close-up on the background flower work. See the white glazing over the pink petals, and leaves?
The right hand, I'm adding deeper peach shade, and defining the darker shade area's of the fingers. On her face, the edges are made as a light is shining on her. Some artist's will darken all the outside lines of the figure. I like to keep it closer to the natural skin tone, and let the color around them help to define the lines.

#15. Close up.
6-08-2011
Close up, you can really see the different colors, light, shade. The blending, glazing, working the colors, and watching the scene unfold each stage, is the exciting part of drawing. As I get closer, and closer to the final additions, I tend to spend longer hours getting every little detail to fit in just right.
#16. The Butterfly.
6-17-2011
I sketched in the butterfly, as I get close to completing the rest of the drawing. At this point, I'm finishing the hair, and effects on her skin. This is also where I get heavy on the defined lines.
Now that the butterfly is sketched in, I start adding sky color all around the butterfly. I find this works better then adding my color to the butterfly first, where the color will often bleed into the white areas around it. If that happens it's not going to erase with a stain base color already set in where the sky color should be. This can ruin my picture so close to the end.

The butterfly sketched in, darker skin tones happening, leaves, and flowers are complete, getting close to done.
#18. Filling in the blank spots.

All the white area's are now filled as background flowers, and leaves on the right side of the drawing.
Skin, hair, are just about where I want them.

#19. Butterfly color.
6-29-2011
I have 2 light layers of blue sky color drawn around the butterfly. Safe to move on, I've already got my different shades of oranges, yellows, black, and brown started into the wings.
Started to darken the outer lines in layers of lightly drawing, erasing to stain, so the black won't bleed into the blue.

#21. Looking good!
06-30-2011
All is done but the sky. That takes several layers, and I like to blend several different
colors of blue shades. After I have the shades of blue blended to my liking, I then do layers of light glazing, for that dream like quality already mentioned.

I don't have this last photo in my files. I will have to open the card, and search for it.
When I copy, and transfer, I can enlarge the picture for a better view here.
There are a few more photo's as I worked the sky colors, but saving them, for now.
Hoping to have her framed soon.
Final note:
This was a very long project to complete. With illness, injuries occurring more then a few times,
since I started, and my Dad passing away in January of 2011, which the first year since will be in
2 more weeks.
There were good interruptions as well. I took a break from Impatien Dreams to help
a talented, promising high school band with their own band logo. That was quite the challenge, but
great fun. Also a success for them. They started making t-shirts to sell with their new logo. A good feeling.
Do-overs are all apart of creating art. It's not fun, and supplies go faster, but in the end, when I fall,
I get back up, and keep at it, until the work is complete to my satisfaction, and hopefully, others will agree,
a beautiful work of art to share.
Once she is framed, I will share the photos. Once my site is ready, Impatien Dreams will be ready to sell.
Love-n-Peace!

I don't have this last photo in my files. I will have to open the card, and search for it.
When I copy, and transfer, I can enlarge the picture for a better view here.
There are a few more photo's as I worked the sky colors, but saving them, for now.
Hoping to have her framed soon.

Brandie Elkin-Artist-Portrait
2009
9"x12" Color pencil portrait drawing. I drew this
portrait from a photograph she once shared in her
Myspace account.
This young woman I met around 4 years
ago in an art site we are both members of.
Art site: Paintings I Love.
Brandie is quite talented in abstract art. I felt
compelled to draw her portrait because of
her striking beauty, her eyes a piercing
bright blue, and her artistic talent. Her abstracts
are something to experience for yourself. If you care to check out her works on *Paintings I Love* art website just click on her link here. Brandie now owns this original portrait.
Below is Brandie's business card, photograph, and contact info.. Check out her abstracts on Paintings I Love.
